I have a love/hate relationship with my son’s IEP.

I love it because I am grateful he has one because it is a legal document that
obligates his district to provide he the specially designed instruction, supports, modifications and accommodations he needs and deserves in order to learn for his unique brain.

But I HATE that it is so deficit focused.

My son, like all our children/students, has amazing, unique and important strengths and interests that should be not only celebrated, but also utilized in order to support his areas of challenge.

Despite the fact that our children's strengths are supposed to be highlighted in their IEP, they are at best overshadowed and at worst lost in the soup of the IEP.

Fighting for a strength based IEP and Goals is a fight worth pursuing, but it takes time.

Lots of time.

Too much time.

So, to make sure my son is seen as a whole child, I created this one page profile for his teachers. Inspired by my recent purchase of , "Comprehensive Guide to Twice Exceptionality" from the creators of ADAPTED4Special Ed, I created a document that shows my child as a whole person. And the best part is that we did it TOGETHER! It was such a great exercise in self confidence and self discovery for my son. Owning all of who he is and being proud of all of it.
At the end of the day, he is an amazing and unique individual full of strengths, interests and challenges that all come together to create the most special human I know.

This is of course great for our kiddos with IEPs. 504 Plans and BIPs, but it actually great for every student.

As I always say, what is best for Twice Exceptional Kids is best for all!!!!!!

In Allyship,

Megan
